Millions of Americans are currently suffering with noise induced permanent hearing loss. Be especially careful this 4th of July, as fireworks and other impact noises can damage your hearing.
Eighty-five decibels(dB) has been shown to cause hearing loss over time, however the louder the sound is, the less time it takes to cause permanent hearing loss. Exploding fireworks can reach over 130 dB of impact noise. A good rule of thumb is if you have to shout to be heard by someone right next to you, it is too loud.
Some other signs of excessive noise exposure are if you ears hurt after leaving the noisy area or if you have ringing in your ears.
To protect your hearing this 4th of July, keep your distance from the source of the fireworks. The closer you are to the source, the louder it will be, and the greater chance of causing hearing loss. Wearing earplugs will also significantly reduce the impact of the noise exposure, and protect your ears.
