Hearing Loss in Young Adults

Young adults are starting to experience hearing loss usually reserved for middle aged ears. This hearing loss is often self induced resulting from exposure to amplified sounds such as iPods and cell phones. As you go about your day you will notice young people with something in their ear almost all the time: driving, walking, working out, at the library, in the computer lab, at the grocery store and shopping mall. It is not uncommon for the volume to be loud in an effort to drown out the background noise. Their ears have very little quiet time to recover from the constant bombardment of noise. Encourage the young people you know to spend some of their day in a quiet place, minimize their use of headphones, and protect their ears from constant noise. We really don’t want them to wear hearing aids any sooner than necessary.
