AFA Memorial, Outstanding Student Scholarships Awarded
Lafayette, Ind — The Audiology Foundation of America (AFA) has chosen Skyler Jennings, AuD, as the 2008 recipient of its Leo Doerfler, PhD, Memorial Scholarship Award. The $5,000 scholarship honors Doerfler’s leadership in audiology’s development, as well as his commitment to understanding audiology’s scientific underpinnings. This scholarship is awarded to a PhD student who already holds the AuD degree.Jennings earned his AuD in 2008 from Purdue University, and is currently enrolled there as a PhD student in psychoacoustics. His research interest surrounds the behavioral manifestations of the medial olivo-cochlear reflex (MOCR). According to Purdue program director Robert E. Novak, PhD, Jennings has “a unique blend of intelligence, broad academic knowledge and skills, clinical skill and sensitivity to the broad age range of clients and their families, an inquisitiveness and research proclivity to address important questions related to the basic sciences and practice issues essential to the future development of our profession, and the work ethic and personality qualities that will enable him to make great research and clinical contributions in the future.”

The AFA has also announced the winners of its Outstanding 2nd-Year AuD Student Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Second-year AuD students Emily M. Leister, from the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium (NOAC), and Kristen Kruse, from the University of Texas at Dallas, have each been awarded a $4,500 scholarship. They were chosen from a group of nominees from four-year AuD programs throughout the country.

In her recommendation letter, Sharon Lesner, PhD, NOAC Coordinator, said Leister (pictured at right) is “motivated, energetic, extremely bright, engaged, confident, outgoing, and focused. Her future holds much promise in terms of significant contributions to the profession of audiology and to individuals with hearing impairments.”

Dr. Linda M. Thibodeau, AuD Program Head at the University of Texas at Dallas, shared similar remarks about Kruse (pictured at left). “I have never known a student with her experience, skills, and dedication who continues to seek excellence with an eager disposition to accept challenge. I believe she will be not only an excellent dedicated professional but also an ambassador for audiology in the world.”

The Outstanding AuD Student Scholarships were established to recognize and support the “best and brightest” AuD students. The scholarships are funded by a grant from the Oticon Foundation, also known as the William Demant and Wife Ida Emilie Foundation, and scholarship winners will be honored by the AFA at events held at their universities.

News: Around The (Acoustic) Horn

BURNSVILLE, Minn—AuDNet Inc has reported the finalization of a strategic supplier agreement with global hearing instrument manufacturer ReSound. This summer, AuDNet will begin offering its audiology member network significant savings on ReSound’s full-line of products.

“Consumers with hearing impairments, difficulty understanding, or slight hearing problems often don’t know that hearing aids come in a variety of styles, as well as technologies that can better serve a particular lifestyle or environment,” says Kathy Foltner, CEO of AuDNet Inc. “I often tell my female patients that hearing aids are like high heels: some styles and types are more appropriate for and work better in certain environments. Having a qualified, highly trained audiologist assess your individual hearing needs with a bigger selection of and better pricing for hearing instruments means you’re going to walk away feeling satisfied and confident about your decision to address your hearing health.”

In addition to expanding its consumer selection, which includes ITC, ITE, and BTEs, the AuDNet-Resound agreement provides consumers at least a 30-day trial period, extended hearing aid warranties, and money back satisfaction on hearing instruments.
